Some time ago (be it weeks or months) I came across a post on tumblr which read: If I don't get married in an Elie Saab dress, then what's the point? That's actually not the literal quote but the meaning is clear.
Elie Saab, a Lebanese designer who dresses many royalties and celebrities , pampers us every year with marvellous gowns and I do admit, I wouldn't mind having one in my closet. I'd wear it like a princess and for sure I'd feel like one (although it's compleltely not my style and i used to say I'd get married wearing a suit; or at least a mini dress and a blazer). Charming, glittering and expensive - 3 adjectives that perfectly describe Saab's creations. Works of art worn on special occasions which call for a toast, red carpet and a bit of vanity. Anders gesagt: the world unattainable for mere mortals (unless the money cat on tumblr suddenly proves real) yet the world everyone of us likes to dream about once in a while.
But the life we live has little to do with this dustland fairytale. Anyway, more and more teenage girls (or should I say people? age is just a number after all) come to believe that the brand tag determines their value or even identity. What I'm talking about here is a matter as old as the hills but since I've been following fashion blogs for more than 5 years and undergone many phases of being the fashion girl, no wonder I have some deeper thoughts on clothes, prices and the industry in general.
We live faster and faster, trends come and go and chain shops change their windows more often than some people change their underwear. To make things even faster and easier we shop online and if something doesn't suit us, we can return it easily or exchange for something else. We follow famous bloggers and see all the pretty dresses they wear and we want exactly the same one! We want Chanel's Boy Bag cause all the top bloggers have them! We wear golden tattoos cause that's the thing of the moment (and it doesn't matter they look ugly on pale skin cause life's too short to care and look in the mirror from time to time). We try to sport winter coats with high heels cause that's oh so NYFW! Quantity over quality is the motto of our times. And fashion blogs contribute to this state of things a lot (I'm not saying every fashion blog but the most popular ones do for sure). We dream of spending an entire month in a luxurious hotel apartment in the heart of Paris and then flying across the pond to our dream house in LA or The Big Apple.
And then suddenly, out of the blue, we raise our heads obove the computer screen (or shall I write our smartphone cause computers are too oldschool?) to see that life isn't a bed of roses. There's stuff to do that can't always be instagrammed. 10 filters won't cover the bags under our eyes. Matcha chai latte doesn't taste as delicious as it looks and that vegan salad makes us wanna throw up instantly as the voice in our head screams 'meeeeeeeeaaaaaaaat!' (I'm not trying to make fun of vegans cause I love vegan food but a bit of meat never hurt nobody, right?).
I was talking today with my high school friend about my blog (she's probably the most faithful follower of my artistic expression in any form). She can't seem to understand why my blog isn't ranked among the ones with the biggest traffic. After all I try to write pretty clever things and don't spam people with my Hello Kitty Cafe progress (btw it's a hard game but your fingers get very skilled so I highly recommend it for boys and girls alike if you know what I mean). There are also other things I don't do as a blogger (don't point out the hiatus if you please). I don't bomb instagram with my breakfast, slefies du jour, close-ups of my shoes, bags, bling blings and other stuff every aspiring it-girl should wear. The thing is, I don't aspire to be the queen of the blogosphere. I'm not gonna tell anyone that in order to feel worthy they absolutely need to stuff their mouth with hummus and vegan burgers. I'm not gonna tell anyone that one and only one particular bag/shirt/pair of heels/etc. is gonna make them interesting. Why? Cause all the pretty dresses are just a pretty packaging. If the insides are empty, even the finest gown won't do. Ever.
